Rules of Golf: Not a Club

Short answer: MR. DIVOT™ is a course-care accessory, not a golf club. You can carry it and use it in a round without it counting against you.

Is MR. DIVOT a club? Does it count toward the 14-club limit?

No. The Equipment Rules define a golf club as "an implement designed to be used for striking the ball." MR. DIVOT has no striking face, no loft, and isn't designed to make a stroke. It's a course-care accessory — the same category as a standard pitch-mark repairer or a sand bottle. It's not a club under the Rules of Golf, and it doesn't count toward the 14-club limit.

Can I use it during a competitive round?

Yes. Repairing a ball mark is something the Rules already allow you to do on the green. MR. DIVOT just lets you do it standing up. It doesn't change what you're doing — only how you're positioned while you do it.

What if a tournament official questions it?

A Committee running a sanctioned event has authority over equipment questions for that competition. If an official ever rules on it on the spot, follow their call gracefully. But the tool sits squarely outside the definition of a club, and that's how it's treated under the Rules of Golf.
